Obesity-related glomerulopathy and podocyte injury: a mini review.

Obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) is morphologically defined as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and glomerulomegaly. Podocyte hypertrophy and reduced density are related to proteinuria which in a portion of patients is in the nephrotic range and evolvs towards renal failure. This article reviews the pathogenetic mechanisms of podocyte injury or dysfunction and lists new possible antiprote...

Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Obesity-Related Glomerulopathy

Obesity-related glomerulopathy is an increasing cause of end-stage renal disease. Obesity has been considered a state of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation and chronic oxidative stress. Augmented inflammation in adipose and kidney tissues promotes the progression of kidney damage in obesity. Adipose tissue, which is accumulated in obesity, is a key endocrine organ that produces multiple bi...

Lipid mediators of inflammation in obesity-related glomerulopathy.

The interplay between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity represents the convergence of two of the most common contemporary clinical issues, and is of particular interest and significance in the context of the burden presented by each at present, and the dismal projections associated with both of these conditions for the future. That obesity leads to CKD through its association with other ...

Hyperthyroidism associated with obesity-related glomerulopathy-like pathologic features.

Thyroid dysfunction is related to many kidney diseases. We herein present the case of a 39-year-old woman who exhibited obesity-related glomerulopathy-like pathologic features in combination with hyperthyroidism. She displayed hyperthyroidism in spite of receiving anti-thyroid drug treatment, with massive proteinuria (4.5 g/gCr). A renal biopsy demonstrated glomerular hypertrophy (average diame...
